Speaker In The Spotlight

Brian Turner

Brian is the Deputy Director for the Colorado Behavioral Healthcare Council (CBHC), the association for Colorado’s statewide, community-based mental health and substance abuse prevention, treatment and recovery system. Prior to stepping into this role, he spent nearly a decade working on behavioral health and healthcare policy, as well as directing programs and grant-funded initiatives for CBHC. His work has focused heavily on health reform; veterans’ mental health; mental health and criminal justice; reducing homelessness; the integration behavioral and physical healthcare; and prevention and wellness efforts statewide. Since 2011, Brian has also served as Director for Mental Health First Aid Colorado, a collaborative public health initiative that has trained over 30,000 Coloradans in Mental Health First Aid and serves as a national model for effectively growing the program. He received his Master’s in Public Health from the Colorado School of Public Health with a focus on health systems, management and policy.

Session Description

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a groundbreaking, 8-hour certification course designed to teach participants to recognized the signs and symptoms of a mental health challenge or crisis, and give them the tools to appropriately respond. This presentation will introduce MHFA, describe a specific public safety module designed for law enforcement participants, and engage participants in the effort underway to extend this training statewide as a complement to Crisis Intervention Training for the law enforcement community.

Other confirmed Mid-Year speakers include CBI Director Mike Rankin, Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz and Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman, and Christina Gunn.
