Band 14 test sets the stage for Vail and Eagle County, Colorado, to join FirstNet

by Dwight Henninger, Police Chief, City of Vail, Colorado

The resort community of Vail, CO, is a tourist-oriented place. People come to ski and enjoy the summer activities. We probably get 2 million visitors a year here. Plus, with I-70, a major corridor, we have all the issues of an interstate running through the community.

We have about 30 officers to deal with those problems – with another 6 uniform code enforcement officers. We also run the 9-1-1 center for Eagle County.

In the mountains of Vail Valley and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, we have passes that go over 10,000 feet. The mountains have a significant impact in the way we use our land mobile radios. We could never really rely on our commercial cellular phones in many parts of the community that are off the interstate. So, we were looking for a solution to fix that problem.

We had an opportunity to test Band Class 14 when we hosted the  Alpine World Ski Championships here in Vail and Beaver Creek in 2015.

So, when we had the chance to get on FirstNet – which has exclusive access to the Band 14 spectrum – we jumped on it. So did the Sheriff's department. Since then, many of the other public safety agencies have also joined, because we see that it works when we have these huge shifts in population.

Save The Date for In-Person Events National Police Week, October 13 – 17, 2021

Our last opportunity to gather for National Police Week was in May of 2019. Over 100 Colorado law enforcement officers gathered to support survivors, past and present, at our national Memorial, the National Mall, and the US Capitol. Over 100 of us, side-by-side with survivors, participated in events to honor and remember peace officers killed in the line-of-duty during the calendar year of 2018.

Because of the pandemic, two years have passed since our last opportunity to assemble.

The survivors, co-workers, extended family and friends, who lost an officer in 2019, have had to wait over a year for National Police Week events (a five month delay for those who fell in 2020).

The pandemic has exacerbated the journey of grief our survivors continue to endure. Recent anti-law enforcement rhetoric and hostility certainly has impacted us all. As our Colorado survivors prepare to travel to Washington, DC this autumn, let's surround them in love and support by accompanying them in October. I am hopeful we can double 2019’s attendance with 200+ Colorado peace officers.

The attachment contains dates and initial information for travel and accommodations. Please review the attachment and make hotel and flight reservations soon. My annual Guide will be available in August.

This October we will be honoring these peace officers added to our National Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial in 2019 –

Granby Police Department is hosting a Scoped Rifle for Patrol Class May 24th, 25th, and 26th

Posted: May 10, 2021

The class will be taught by Neal Ash of Precision Rifle Workshop (PRW), and held at the Byers Range in Parshall, Colorado. Enrollment fees for this class have been covered by the North West Regional Post grant. Agencies interested in attending only need to provide ammunition and cover lodging and per diem costs for their officers. We currently have 6 spots available.

Attached flyer here. Some changes: registrations should be made directly through Sgt. Jeffrey Heitzenrater at the below email. Due to the current ammunition shortage, the instructor has adjusted the round count to 200 rounds for semi-auto, 100 rounds for bolt guns, and 100 rounds for handgun. If you are able, I would bring the full round count just in case.

As far as lodging for the class, we are working on discounted rates for River Run RV Resort in Granby. They have high end rental cabins, as well as RV spots. I will try to get the discounted rates verified this week. There are other options in the Granby and Hot Sulphur Springs areas as well.

Please contact me with any other questions.
