Narcan Training in SE and S Central Colorado

November 11, 2016

The Colorado Office of the Attorney General , working in partnership with the Colorado Consortium for Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention, the Harm Reduction Action Center, and Denver Health, purchased 2,500 Narcan dual-packs for law enforcement personal and first responders in 17 counties with high rates of drug overdose deaths and training in how to administer Narcan.

Law enforcement personnel and first responders who attend and complete the training and who are from the following counties of SE and South-Central Colorado will receive a FREE Narcan Rescue Kit:

Baca, Bent, Fremont, Huerfano, Las Animas, Otero, Pueblo

Although law enforcement personnel and first responders are the primary intended audience, this 2-hour training is open to any individual interested in learning how to administer Narcan.

The training is free to attend and registration is required. To register, visit: http://www.csoc.org/training_schedule.asp.

There are two training sessions schedule for La Junta (Otero, Baca, Bent, and possibly Las Animas) on November 17th at the Council Chambers, 601 Colorado Ave, for 8:30am and 10:30am.

There are three training sessions scheduled for Pueblo (Fremont, Las Animas and Pueblo) on November 18th at the Emergency Service Center, 101 W. 10th St. for 8:30am, 10:30 am and 1:30pm.

Participants will be trained on how to properly identify symptoms and conditions of opioid overdose and will learn the proper methods for administering Narcan. The trainings will include instruction on the use of the OpiRescue app that helps recognize signs of an overdose, provides instructions of administering Narcan/Naloxone, and has the function to report reversal of overdose incidents.

The instructors will offer train-the-trainer content so agencies can provide this important training in-house in the future. Although law enforcement personnel and first responders from outside of the 17-counties will not be provided the Narcan inhalers, they are encouraged to attend the training, including the train-the-trainer instruction to take back to their agencies.

The training instructors are:

· Lisa Raville, Executive Director, Harm Reduction Action center
· Josh Blum, MD, Denver Health
· Chief Rick Brandt, Evans Police Department, recent past President, Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police
